Q5. I own a freehold property, why am I expected to pay a Service Charge?

A. You will almost certainly have purchased your freehold property as part of a development or estate. For this reason you will have an obligation to pay towards the upkeep of common areas and accessways; your Freehold Transfer Document will detail the specifics. Your service charge also contributes to the administration costs of your development including accountancy fees and public liability insurance.
